Understanding SEER2 Ratings: What Central Florida Homeowners Need to Know

Energy Savings Team 4 min read

What Changed: SEER vs. SEER2

In January 2023, the Department of Energy updated how air conditioner efficiency is measured. The new standard, SEER2, uses a more realistic testing procedure that better reflects real-world conditions: higher static pressure that mimics actual duct systems.

Because of the tougher testing conditions, SEER2 numbers are slightly lower than the old SEER ratings. A system rated at 15 SEER under the old standard might be rated around 14.3 SEER2 under the new one. The system didn’t get less efficient. The measuring stick just changed.

What’s the Minimum in Florida?

Florida falls into the Southeast region, which requires a minimum of 15 SEER2 for split-system air conditioners. This is one of the highest minimums in the country, reflecting the fact that our systems run harder and longer than most.

How SEER2 Affects Your Energy Bills

The difference between efficiency levels is significant in Central Florida, where cooling accounts for 40-60% of your electricity bill:

  • 15 SEER2 (minimum): Meets code but represents baseline efficiency
  • 17 SEER2: Roughly 12% more efficient than the minimum, meaningful savings over a Florida cooling season
  • 20+ SEER2: Premium efficiency with the lowest operating costs, but higher upfront investment

For a typical Central Florida home spending $200/month on cooling, moving from an older 10 SEER system to a 17 SEER2 unit could save $80-100/month during peak summer.

Is Higher SEER2 Always Better?

Not necessarily. The law of diminishing returns applies. The jump from 15 to 17 SEER2 saves more per dollar invested than the jump from 19 to 21 SEER2. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay in your home, your budget, and your comfort priorities.

Rebates and Incentives

Higher-efficiency systems often qualify for utility rebates and federal tax credits, which can offset the higher purchase price. Ask us about current incentives when getting a quote. They change frequently and can significantly affect the math.
