When to Repair vs. Replace Your Air Conditioner
The $5,000 Rule of Thumb
A common industry guideline is to multiply the age of your system by the cost of the repair. If that number exceeds $5,000, replacement is usually the better investment. For example, if your 12-year-old system needs a $450 repair, that’s $5,400 — leaning toward replacement territory.
But this rule doesn’t account for everything. Here are the factors that really matter.
When Repair Makes Sense
Your system is under 10 years old. Modern AC units are built to last 15-20 years in Florida’s demanding climate. If yours is relatively young, most repairs are worth the investment.
The repair is minor. Capacitor replacements, contactor swaps, and thermostat issues are affordable fixes that don’t indicate deeper problems.
You’ve maintained the system well. A well-maintained system that needs an occasional repair will continue to serve you reliably.
When Replacement Is the Smarter Move
Your system uses R-22 refrigerant. R-22 (Freon) was phased out in 2020. If your system still uses it, refrigerant costs are astronomical and only going up. Upgrading to a modern R-410A system saves money long-term.
Energy bills keep climbing. Older systems lose efficiency over time. A new high-efficiency system can reduce your cooling costs by 30-50%, which adds up quickly in Central Florida where AC runs 8-10 months per year.
Repairs are becoming frequent. If you’ve called for service three or more times in the past two years, your system is telling you something. Those repair costs add up fast.
Your system is 15+ years old. Even if it’s still running, a system this old is operating well below modern efficiency standards and is increasingly likely to fail without warning.
The Efficiency Factor
Today’s air conditioners are rated using SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2). The minimum in Florida is 15 SEER2, but many homeowners opt for 16-20 SEER2 systems. If your current system is rated below 13 SEER, upgrading could cut your cooling costs significantly.
Making the Decision
We never pressure homeowners into a replacement when a repair makes sense. When you call us for a diagnosis, we’ll give you an honest assessment of both options — including repair costs, estimated remaining lifespan, and what a new system would cost — so you can make the decision that’s right for your budget and comfort.
