Why Indoor Air Quality Matters More in Florida
Florida’s Indoor Air Quality Challenge
Because we keep our homes sealed tight against the heat and humidity, indoor air pollutants can accumulate to levels 2-5 times higher than outdoor air. Combined with Florida’s year-round pollen, high mold potential, and constant AC use, indoor air quality deserves more attention than most homeowners give it.
Common Indoor Pollutants in Florida Homes
Mold and Mildew
Florida’s humidity is mold’s best friend. Any area where moisture accumulates — around AC vents, in bathrooms, near windows — can become a mold breeding ground. Mold spores circulate through your duct system, affecting every room.
Dust Mites
These microscopic allergens thrive in warm, humid environments. Central Florida’s climate is ideal for dust mite populations to flourish year-round, unlike northern states where winter cold provides some relief.
VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds)
Cleaning products, paint, new furniture, and building materials off-gas chemicals into your indoor air. In a tightly sealed Florida home, these compounds have nowhere to go.
Pollen
Central Florida has one of the longest pollen seasons in the country, with different plants producing pollen nearly year-round. When you open doors and windows, pollen enters and gets trapped inside.
How Your HVAC System Affects Air Quality
Your air conditioning system is either your biggest ally or your biggest enemy when it comes to indoor air quality:
- Clean filters trap particles before they circulate. Dirty filters let them through — or worse, become a source of contamination themselves
- Clean ductwork delivers clean air. Dirty ducts harbor and distribute dust, mold, and allergens
- Proper humidity control (below 50% indoor) prevents mold growth. An undersized or struggling AC lets humidity creep up
Steps to Improve Your Home’s Air Quality
- Upgrade your air filter — Consider a MERV 11-13 filter for better particle capture
- Control humidity — Keep indoor humidity between 40-50% with your AC or a dehumidifier
- Consider UV germicidal lights — Installed in your air handler, these kill mold and bacteria as air passes through
- Schedule duct cleaning — Every 3-5 years, or sooner if you notice dust buildup or musty odors
- Maintain your AC — Annual tune-ups keep your system’s dehumidification working properly
